“Am I going to bruise?” Having been an injector assistant, I’ve been asked many questions regarding Botox. Here’s the scoop.

Although not common, bruising may occur after Botox injections.

Think of it this way.  Anytime a needle punctures the skin, your chances of rupturing a blood vessel are very likely.

Everyone’s anatomy is different and blood vessels are difficult to see.  At Spa Trouve, the injectors use very fine needles and special technique to minimize the risk of bruising.  However, if a blood vessel is ruptured, the blood slowly seeps into the surrounding area.

The blood has nowhere to go, leaving a purple or red mark behind.  This is what we know as a bruise.  After a day or two, the bruise will turn the skin black and blue, as the damage to the tissue surrounding the broken blood vessels becomes more apparent. Over time, the body re-absorbs the blood, which makes the bruise turn a yellowish-green color.

Slowly the body heals itself and the skin returns to its normal color.

1) HOW TO PREVENT A BRUISE FROM BOTOX

10-12 Days Prior – Avoid:

Aspirin, St. John’s wort, Omega 3 or fish oil supplements, high doses of vitamin E, anti-inflammatories e.g. Ibuprofen, Excedrin, Aleve, Advil, Motrin, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng

7-10 Days Prior – Start:

Arnica Montana orally in tablet form, eating pineapple (pineapple has bromelin enzymes, which enables the body to clear metabolic waste & heal itself faster)

2-3 Days Prior – Avoid:

Alcohol

DAY OF TREATMENT

Bruising can start to appear within 0-4 hours after treatment.

0-4 Hours After – Avoid

Strenuous activity

2) IF YOU BRUISE: HOW TO HEAL IT

  1.     Apply a cold compress to the bruised areas on and off for the first 24 hours.
  2.     Continue taking Arnica Montana orally in tablet form for 7-10 days.
  3.     Continue eating pineapple.
  4.     Apply Arnica Montana cream topically to the bruised areas for 7-10 days.
  5.     As necessary, cover up bruises with Spa Trouve’s high quality mineral makeup, ColoreScience.

Take note:

If you’re bruiser, try to avoid your Botox treatment while on your menstrual cycle!  Or just know that you may be more sensitive during this time.

If you plan well for bruising and follow good post-care, there will be little to no downtime.   Plus a little bit of cover up never hurt anyone!
