The 411 on Laser Hair Removal

Raise your hand if you’re sick of shaving every day!

I was.

But, that was BEFORE I started getting laser hair removal treatments.

I’m sure most of you know what laser hair removal is or have at least heard about it. While the first laser was used in medicine almost 50 years ago, technology has been perfected in the last decade and it’s growth has been exponential. Did you know that laser hair removal is one of the most common procedures in the U.S.? And it’s no wonder why.

There is no question that the benefits of laser hair removal are AMAZING! You don’t have to worry about shaving, waxing, tweezing, ingrown hairs, or that embarrassing five o’clock shadow you used to get. But when it comes down to it, what do you REALLY know about laser hair removal?

You probably know that it uses a laser, it gets rid of hair, and that a lot of people are getting it. But in all reality, there’s actually a lot more to know.

For all you who are considering getting treatments, are on the fence, or are just curious about how it works, here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get about laser hair removal.

1. How does it work?

Our lasers emit a pulse of light, which targets the pigmentation and blood supply of your hair follicle. The pigmentation absorbs the light, which then destroys the hair follicle. Because the hair follicle is damaged, hair will stop growing in areas treated.

2.How many treatments do you need and how often do you get treated?

To see a long term reduction of hair, we have seen that you need at least 8-12 treatments. Depending on the area you are getting done, you will come in every 4-8 weeks for treatment.

3. Is it painful?

People compare the feeling of laser hair removal treatments to a rubber band snapping against the skin. It’s uncomfortable, but definitely not unbearable. Because everyone has different pain tolerance, we can prescribe a topical numbing cream.

4. What lasers are being used?

We provide only the highest quality laser technology. We use state-of-the-art Cynosure® Elite™ and Candela devices. Unlike intense pulsed light or radio frequency, our powerful ND:Yag and Alexandrite lasers provide powerful and long-lasting results.

5. Who performs the treatments?

All our treatments performed at Spa Trouve are under the direction of our Medical Director, Dr. Vaughn Johnson. All of our providers are highly trained and certified to perform each treatment that we offer. To date, our technicians have performed over 300,000 treatments. Our technicians evaluate your skin type, hair color, and medical history to create a customized treatment plan.

6. What are the risks?

Laser hair removal is a very quick and easy procedure. There is no recovery time, so you can go back to your daily activities immediately after treatment. Risks are very low with this procedure. With all our treatments at Spa Trouve, we have consent forms explaining all possible risks.

What is Dysport?

By this point, I think it’s safe to say we’ve pretty much all heard of Botox. All the celebs are raving about it, more and more medical spa’s and doctor’s offices around are offering it, and you may even have multiple friends who are using it.

And it works. Ask anyone who’s done it. I bet they would all agree it’s pretty much the bee’s knees when it comes to getting rid of pesky wrinkles and making you look 10 years younger. But like Band-Aid and Kleenex, Botox is a brand name that has come to define what the product does.

Did you know that there are other brands out there that work just as well as Botox?

Enter Dysport.

Botox and Dysport are very similar. Think tomayto, tomahto. Both use botulinum toxin type A to smooth wrinkles caused by active muscles in the face. The neurotoxin is injected into the muscles to relax the wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. They both last around 3-5 months and have been FDA approved for both cosmetic and medical uses.

While Botox has the name, Dysport is starting to catch people’s attention.

Dysport was approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2009, but has been used in Europe for over 20 years. Botox, however, has been used in the United States for many years, which explains its popularity.

There are only a few small differences between the Dysport and Botox. Dysport has a smaller molecule, making the unit measurement a little different than Botox. For example, if you normally get 20 units of Botox, you would need 60 units of Dysport to have the same effect. As far as payment, to get the equivalent of Botox, you are paying about the same (or sometimes even less, depending on the clinic) for Dysport.

Dysport also has a slightly faster onset than Botox, taking 2-5 days to set in, while Botox takes around 4-7.  Some claim that Dysport doesn’t last as long as Botox, but that is still being debated and studied.

The last real difference between the two is that Dysport has been said to diffuse more, meaning that it spreads wider throughout the area. This can be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on the area.

If you look up reviews online, some people swear by Botox, and others by Dysport. Some research shows that Botox works better, and others that Dysport works best. Overall they are going to give the same effect. No more wrinkles!

In the end, it’s much more important WHO is injecting your Dysport or Botox. We have highly trained injectors here at Spa Trouve who are extremely talented at what they do. If you are ready to get rid of those wrinkles and want to try Dysport, we are currently offering a $50 instant rebate! Amazing right? Protect Your Investment During Winter Months

During Utah County’s cold winter months, our patients at Spa Trouvé often seek recommendations on products to protect their skin. This is especially true if they have invested in a laser treatment, advanced exfoliation or resurfacing procedure.  Although each person’s skin type varies, below are some elements that can be added to any daily regimen to leave skin (especially healing skin) feeling refreshed and renewed, but also protected.

Protect.

The harsh winds during Utah’s coldest months tend to be unforgiving on delicate skin and will leave skin feeling dry and damaged. To protect against the elements, look for products with zinc oxide. This ingredient is most commonly known for its ability to protect against photodamage (the suns UV rays), but what most people don’t know is that it also acts as an occlusive. This means it acts as a physical barrier on the skin to protect it from the surrounding environment.  In addition to its protective capabilities, zinc oxide is also anti-inflammatory, making it perfect for skin post treatment for any kind of inflammatory skin condition (e.g. rosacea, anceic breakouts).

You should try: SkinCueticals® Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50

Replenish.

During winter, space heaters can make any area more comfortable and cozy, but they can also dehydrate your skin. Dehydration is a lack of water in the skin and is not only uncomfortable but can also lead to an uneven, aged appearance.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring ingredient that holds 1,000x its weight in water. Because our body produces it internally, it makes it more easily assimilated into the skin when applied topically. Products that incorporate this ingredient give skin a plump and smooth appearance.  Also, since hydrating your skin increases its water content, its preps the surface for a moisturizing product to be applied afterwards.

Prevent.

Changes in temperature and humidity levels during wintertime dry the skin and wear it out. Dryness is often times confused with dehydration, but it’s important to know the difference between the two because they are treated differently. As discussed above, dehydration is a lack of water, while dryness is a lack of oil. Dehydrated skin needs to be hydrated and dry skin needs to be moisturized. The oil in moisturizing products aims to form a barrier at the skin’s surface to seal in moisture. As an added benefit, other ingredients like Vitamin E help to replace lost lipids while providing antioxidant properties.

Rejuvenate.

Cleansing is necessary to remove dirt, makeup and oil no matter what season it is. However, during the winter it’s sometimes necessary to choose a cleanser that will effectively clean sensitized skin without irritating it further. This is especially true if regular resurfacing procedures are being done.

You should try: SkinCeuticals® Gentle Cleanser
