The Vampire Facial has been attracting all sorts of reactions ever since Kim Kardashian tried it on an episode of her reality show and Instagrammed the bloody results. Get the real deal from our spa consultants on what the Vampire Facial is, what it does, and — most importantly — whether it’s worth it.
What is the Vampire Facial?
The Vampire Facial relies on your own blood to rejuvenate the skin — only 2 teaspoons’ worth. A doctor draws a small amount of blood from your arm. They then mix the blood with chemicals, using a centrifuge to spin the blood into a platelet-rich, gelatinous facial mask. The substance is sometimes referred to as PRP, which means platelet-rich plasma. The bloody facial product is then applied to your skin by an esthetician. They will use a microneedling process to push the plasma into the skin cells, paying special attention to all those problem areas.
The Vampire Facial that Kim got on the show involves facial filler injections … you know, like Botox. There are versions of the Vampire or PRP facial that do not involve these injections, so you can still get the benefits of the plasma without injecting fillers into your skin. Still, this process will feel like you are getting pricked with dozens of tiny needles for the better part of an hour.
If you have ever had acupuncture or a facial filler injection, then you can expect the process to feel like that. It isn’t very painful and the blood draw is over quickly, but it’s not exactly as relaxing as a massage either.
If you have sensitive skin, you may get some swelling and bruising from the microneedling. Some women have reported bruising that takes one to two weeks to fade, so you might want to avoid scheduling this facial just before a big event, just in case you get bruised.
If you’re thinking of getting the Vampire Facial and you want the best results, Spa Week recommends getting one of these facials per month for three months, followed by one annual maintenance treatment.
What are the Benefits of the Vampire Facial?
The PRP facial claims to offer many benefits, and come with no harmful side effects. The combination of plasma and microneedling helps buff away acne scars and stretch marks, boost collagen production (to decrease wrinkles), and increase skin elasticity for improved anti-aging.
Why does it work? Plasma contains growth hormones and proteins that tell your skin to create healthy cells and tissue. Plasma also gets to work repairing damaged tissue and blood vessels from the inside out. Since the PRP facial uses compounds found in your own body to promote skin healing, it’s totally safe and will not cause an adverse reaction.
After the facial, your face may be red and a little bloody. The redness should decrease overnight. Many patients notice decreased wrinkles and fine lines right after the treatment. This initial result is due to the volume of plasma-soaked up by the skin.
While the initial anti-aging boost will decrease after a couple days, your plasma will go on promoting collagen production for nearly a month. In the first few weeks after getting a vampire facial, you will start to notice your skin looking healthier and firmer, thanks to better elasticity. Your face and neck will look more youthful overall, and wrinkles and fine lines will be less noticeable.
