How to Winterize your Skincare Routine

By February 11, 2014No Comments

There is no question that winter is harsh on your skin! Especially when you live in a dry, cold state, like Utah. When the temperature drops, so does the moisture in the air! This will leave you with dry, flaky, dull skin. Not only that, your skin starts getting irritated, inflamed, and extra sensitive. It’s a domino effect, and it sometimes seems like you can’t recover.

While your skincare regimen may work for your skin in the warmer months, it’s imperative to make a few changes to your routine, to combat the cold.

Here are a few ways we have found that will help your skin this winter:

1. Use a gentle cleanser. In the winter, your skin is exposed to the harsh elements. Using a harsh cleanser will just make your skin dry, dull, and flaky. By switching to a gentle cleanser in the winter, your skin will be able to recover and get its luster back.

2. Switch out your moisturizer. While your regular moisturizer is probably perfect for your skin the summer, it may not be enough in cold weather. Switch to a richer moisturizer during the winter to make sure your skin is getting the moisture it needs.

3. Lose the Hot Baths/Showers. As nice as long, hot shower feels, you’ve got to give them up in the winter. Hot water dries out your skin and takes out all your moisture. Try and keep your showers short and luke warm.

4. Always wear your SUNSCREEN. UV rays are still just as strong in the winter as they are in the summer. Slather on that sunscreen all year round for the best looking skin, as well as preventing future sun damage.

5. Get a Humidifier. Investing in a good humidifier is huge when it comes to keeping your skin moisturized in cold weather. It will help replace the moisture that is constantly sucked out by your heater.

6. Exfoliate. Exfoliating is very important in the winter. Not only does it help facilitate quicker cell turnover, it also helps your moisturizer penetrate deeper into your skin. When your skin dries, it stops shedding, and will keep your moisturizer (no matter how thick or often you apply) from getting into the skin. Make sure you exfoliate at least once a week.

7. Use an Antioxident. Antioxidents protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays, as well as protecting your skin from free radicals. This will give you much more protected from the environment than just a sunscreen would. Plus ingredients like Vitamin E & C will sooth your skin, and help you replaces lost lipids.

8. Stay Hydrated! Don’t forget, good skin also comes from the inside out. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated!
